Grape Cloud discusses how she hates people who like a kind of music because it's the "in" thing to do.

Hello. I didn't really do anything today, so I'm going to write about something other than myself (I know, quite a rarity).

I bought a copy of Seventeen today. Not because I plan on reading it, but rather to make a notebook with clippings from it. Anyway, in it was this article on emo. I'm sure most of you know what kind of music emo is, it's short for emotional, and it's guys singing about girls and all these other emotional things. Lately, it's been really popular for some reason (probably because teen pop had nothing to do with real feeling, and everyone is sick of it now).

This whole article was on emo. It had bands that are semi-popular, how to dress emo, and emo pick up lines (which were actually cheesier than regular pick up lines). I don't know why, but this article bothered the living hell out of me. I'm not some snob who gets pissed when a band/type of music that they like becomes popular, I actually like the fact that people can connect with good music (at least, I think the music I listen to is good, it's personal opinion). I hate the way that the article made emo sound like just some passing fad that all the teens of today have to be in on. It's not a fad, it's a type of music with a shitty name!

Now there maybe some teens who will read that article, and like the bands they read about, not because they are the "in" thing to listen to, but rather because they are good, and the teenagers can relate to their lyrics and such. It pisses me off that some teens are going to dress emo and act emo and listen to emo, just to be cool. Then, when it's not cool anymore, they're going to throw all those cds out, and the clothes and stuff like that. I just hate that, the way that, to the people who read stuff like Seventeen, this is all some fucking fad, and not a new kind of music, that's better than the shit they used to listen to, that they're going to stop listening to now, because it's not the "in" kind of music anymore.

It also ticks me off that there's a way to dress based on the music you listen to. There is no "emo" way to dress, just like there's no "jazz" way to dress. Besides, no one can dress based on the music they like, because most people like more than one kind of music. I just hate the way that so many people don't care about being true to themselves, and just care about fads and stuff, and about following them. If people didn't care about fads and just liked the music they liked, than maybe there wouldn't be any articles on how to be "emo" in Seventeen. Not only that, but the editor said she hoped that emo wouldn't become the next big thing, so that there wouldn't be any copycat bands. If you don't want it to be popular, than why put it in a shitty teen magazine for impressionable teenagers who can barely form their own personality, becuase they're too busy basing their lives on what's popular?

In conclusion, I'm fucking sick and tired of people who are total fashists, who just listen to whatever is popular, whether they connect with it or not. I listen to emo bands, but not because I'm fashionable with what I listen to, because I also listen to jazz, rock, and the occasional hip-hop cd. I also think that there is no such thing as an entire culture based on a set of bands you listen to. Put that friggin' teen magazine down, and learn to develop your own opinions about music, that's all I ask.

P.S.-To those who read my Teen Open Diary, diary, yes, this is the same entry about music! Sorry, but I felt lazy today.
